Noise Ratchet is a band from San Diego. Somewhere between the optimism of the summer and shear boredom, Joel Hosler (bass and vocals), Roger Molina (guitars and backing vocals), Danny Lothspeich and Brandon Young formed Noise Ratchet. Now they stand waist-deep in a pool of rabid anticipation.

In the Spring of 1999, a loose combination of pent-up emotions, the love of a guitar’s rigid crunch and infatuation with addictive melodic overtones fused. Within weeks, a compound of punk, post-grunge alt-rock and emo emerged. By the end of summer, Noise Ratchet amassed enough material to release their first EP, Why We Cry.

Call it work ethic and a down-to-earth approach. Call it fate. Call it a young band with an understanding of what makes a great record, without ever making one. Whatever.

A year later, Noise Ratchet had dented the collective skull of the So Cal music scene; selling over 3,000 copies of Why We Cry independently and ascending to the top of the MP3.com download charts. After a year of intense rehearsal, they moved to the road. The last half of 2000 was spent moving through the California club scene, working up and down the Western seaboard and out into the crevasses of the Midwest. Soon, Noise Ratchet was eliciting comparisons to Jimmy Eat World and Sunny Day Real Estate well beyond their sunny home state.

Returning home to San Diego in January of 2001, Noise Ratchet’s foundation shifted. Hosler traded in his 4-string for a mic stand and center stage. Bassist Jon Jameson was added to and the lineup was complete. More touring ensued.

In March of 2001, Noise Ratchet joined The Militia Group. With strongly woven themes of life, love and faith materializing from a developing confidence in both musicianship and direction, Noise Ratchet entered Encinitas’ Bigfish studios (Blink 182, Jimmy Eat World, Rocket From The Crypt, Hot Snakes, Mineral) in November and recorded their first-full length release.

This is the wonderful invention.
